About WordTheatre

WordTheatre is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to keeping the love of language and literature alive through the ancient tradition of oral storytelling. Since its inception in 2003, Artistic Director Cedering Fox and her partners have been creating, producing and recording live events featuring literary works performed by world-class authors and actors at our salons in Los Angeles, New York and London.

WordTheatre developed and launched "Life After Birth" with Dani Klein, a series of short stories written and performed by actors about how having children has changed their lives. In collaboration with The Met Theatre and The Autry National Center, WordTheatre LA and Darrell Larson, produced The Great Writers' Series Rides Again, twelve nights of the best literary offerings from the Western genre performed by wonderful actors over twelve evenings.

WordTheatre LA most recently launched a program this past August at Berendo Middle School in Los Angeles. This program will bring our authors and actors into some of California’s toughest schools to build excitement for an 8-week writing workshop, which will get the students reading their own stories at a second assembly, which will be their showcase event. The goal is to ignite a whole new generation of literature fans!

WordTheatre NY

As we have found many of our favorite authors in the pages of The Pushcart Prize: Best of The Small Presses’ thirty-three annual anthologies, WordTheatre enjoys doing benefits for The Pushcart Prize Fellowships in at East Hampton's Guild Hall, as our way of saying thank you to founder and editor Bill Henderson and all the distinguished judges who are committed to keeping independent voices in literature alive. Our next one is scheduled for June 27th, 2009.

Our most recent Manhattan series took place in the Fifth Floor Library of Soho House in the spring of 2009. ” 9 Read 9”, actually turned out to be a misnomer. Ten great actors read nine great stories –we needed two actors to do a “he said, she said” reading of Rick Moody’s hot-off-the-press story, Modern Lovers. Hosts James Franco, Brian Cox and Carla Gugino brought the events together in an intimate way for everyone present.

Previous NY shows produced in association with Darrell Larson include single author events featuring Rick Moody and James Salter at Manhattan’s The Cutting Room. At East Hampton's Guild Hall, John Heard performed the title role in a staged reading of Kay Eldredge's one man show, The Rambler: The Principal Part of Dr. Johnson and Xander Berkeley starred in a staged reading of Gonzo: The Life And Times of Hunter S. Thompson As Only He Tell It.

BBC Radio 4’s Loose Ends has featured many of our actors and authors.
